Way back in 1992, a black-and-white film that was so vulgar as it was originally the dreaded NC-17 rating given. However, the film was given an R-rating without a single image or word processing. The film has become a standard, how the dialogue should be handled and a new brand of comedy brought to the screen. This film was Clerks. It was the first film from director Kevin Smith's New Jersey living. Smith is a subject of both a large following and numerous controversies, but it is undeniable that he is one of the most important and most prominent film directors of our time. I would even go so far as to say, he is the new Woody Allen. They can be something to be skeptical, but think about it. Woody Allen has always been films that have been marked by dialogue, and the comedy of that dialogue is one of the best ever put on film. Kevin Smith is a similar thing. Instead of writing about his films, where the actors look as if they are to put on performances, he uses believable characters that the players can write embody.Sure, Smith, a fair amount of physical and often blue humor, but it oddly enough is a heart behind it. His characters are believable, even if the plot of one of his films, it is not. I find it interesting that his first and the third film, Clerks and Chasing Amy, completely and utterly believable, but also other films by him are as Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back … less than. But he is able to make you believe that all the stories fit together in one world, affectionately known as the View Askewniverse, after his production company. It is an appeal of his films, because most conversations in this discussion, that everyone will have had especially boys, to some point.Smith also uses his films for social commentary. His film is a dogma of the most controversial films of all time by both funny about religion, while not at the same time ridicule those who have spiritual beliefs in a harsh manner. The film Chasing Amy also offers insight into the gay community, about a man who falls in love with a lesbian. Controversy follows him around, and he apparently did not want it any other way than that.
